If you’re moving from another provider to a Telstra plan, simply take up the new plan and we’ll transfer your service.

You won't need to cancel with your old provider, but you should check in case there are any termination fees that will apply.

Just check your address to confirm your home is nbn-ready then choose an nbn plan and we'll switch you over. 

If the nbn network is not available at your address yet,  don't worry - you can choose an nbn-ready broadband plan now and we’ll help you to switch when the time comes.

If you’re coming from another provider, we’ll transfer your service and you don’t have to do anything. You should check in case your old provider has any termination fees.

Changing your Telstra plan is easy and you can do it up to once a month for no cost. Here’s how:

1. Check your address This tells you what type of plan you can change to. If your address is nbn-ready, you can switch over to the nbn network at the same time.

2. Choose a new plan Choose the data and speed you need. All plans are month-to-month and nbn-ready.

3. Sign in to checkout Follow the prompts to complete your move. We'll do the rest.

If you don't have Telstra Smart Modem we'll check if the modem you do have is compatible. If it is we provide you with a conversion kit to connect to the nbn network.

If your existing modem isn't compatible we’ll send you a new Telstra Smart Modem.

The speeds you may get will depend on whether you’re connecting to the nbn network, cable or ADSL.

Typical nbn speeds (apart from Fixed Wireless connections)

On our nbn Standard plan you can expect typical download speeds of 25Mbps between 7pm and 11pm. That’s fast enough for up to 3 people streaming, browsing and gaming.

On our nbn Standard Plus plan you can expect typical download speeds of 50Mbps between 7pm and 11pm. That’s fast enough for up to 6 people streaming in HD and responsive gaming.

On our nbn Premium plan you can expect typical download speeds of 100Mbps between 7pm and 11pm. That’s enough for up to 9 people streaming simultaneously in HD and super responsive gaming. Nbn 100 is currently only available for FTTP and HFC connections.

Speeds will vary due to a number of factors including customer hardware, equipment and software, server limitations, the use of Wi-Fi or ethernet, type of content being accessed and the number users online (including Telstra Air users).  

An nbn service can never go faster than the maximum line speed available at your premises, so for FTTN/B/C customers we will confirm your actual speeds after connection if your typical speed will be limited.

Typical cable and ADSL speeds

Cable and ADSL speeds depend on your location. We’ll let you know your actual speeds once you’re connected via a speed test.

All speeds are indicative only. Speeds experienced may be lower due to various factors including your location, in-home internet setup and wiring.

The biggest impact on your internet speed is whether you’re on ADSL, cable or the nbn network. But your in-home set up and how you use the internet also can play a role. Here are some quick tips to try:

Place your modem in a central location, away from other electrical equipment

Check for interference from other electrical equipment by switching them off

Reboot your modem, leaving it off for 5-10 seconds

Internet speed is also affected by how many people are using the internet at the same time, both inside your home and in your local area. If you typically have a number of data hungry activities like gaming and HD streaming going on at the same time in your home, you may want to stagger them and manage time slots.
